Newcastle United’s manager Eddie Howe has cast serious doubt on the future of star striker Alexander Isak, declaring that “everything is in play” while stressing the need for players who are genuinely dedicated to the club.
The situation has intensified as Isak is currently training separately from the main squad. Howe confirmed that a decision was made that “we can’t involve him with the group” at this time. This follows Newcastle’s rejection of a substantial £110m bid from Liverpool for the Swedish international last week.
Isak has reportedly indicated a desire to explore other opportunities, and Howe admitted he was not aware of any assurances from the club’s ownership that the striker would not be sold. The manager acknowledged that “there are discussions going on all the time that I'm not party to,” highlighting the fluid nature of the situation.
Speaking after a 2-0 friendly loss to Atletico Madrid, Howe reiterated his personal preference. “Of course I have a preferred outcome. I want the best and the strongest squad possible,” he stated, before adding the crucial caveat: “but I also want players that really want to play for this football club.” When asked what needed to change for Isak to be reintegrated, Howe placed the responsibility squarely on the player, saying, “That’s for him to answer.”
The pre-season defeat to the Spanish giants served as a stark reminder of Newcastle’s lack of attacking depth, an issue magnified by Isak’s absence. Anthony Gordon led the line but caused a late injury scare, though Howe expects him to be “OK” for the season opener against Aston Villa. Still, with Callum Wilson’s summer departure leaving a void, the team’s attacking alternatives, William Osula and Sean Neave, are limited.
The contrast with Atletico’s options was clear, as Diego Simeone could afford to bring 41-goal duo Antoine Griezmann and Alexander Sorloth off the bench. A clinical finish from Julian Alvarez and a clever flick from Griezmann secured the win for the visitors, offering a preview of the quality Newcastle will face in the Champions League.
Despite a frustrating transfer window that has seen the club miss out on several targets, Howe remains “hopeful” of new additions. The club is reportedly interested in AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw and Brentford forward Yoane Wissa.
On a brighter note, supporters got their first home look at new signing Anthony Elanga. The winger showed flashes of his one-on-one ability, twice beating his man down the right flank, though his final delivery was dealt with by the Atletico defence. His directness suggests he will be a valuable asset, but Howe will undoubtedly be pushing for more reinforcements before the competitive season kicks off.
